McGill University on Stolen Land

"McGill is located on the unceded traditional territory of the Kanien’kehá:ka – otherwise known as People of the Flint or Mohawk – of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy... this history is largely absent on campus, in both physical markers and presence in discourse." The Union for Gender Empowerment is launching a land rights project to challenge James McGill's decision to posthumously donate his unlawfully acquired land to the founding of the school known today as McGill University. Groups may submit information about individual rooms, buildings, outdoor spaces, or larger areas of the McGill campus as we begin to document the area.

About this org

The Union for Gender Empowerment is a trans feminist service of the Student Society of McGill University (SSMU). Everyone is welcome to use our services! We coordinate an alternative lending library (with over a thousand titles!); a cooperative pay-what-you-can “shop” (The Co-op) stocking ecologically responsible menstrual products, DIY sex toys, safer sex supplies, and gender empowerment items; and a zine library. The UGE also runs trans 101/allyship and anti-oppression workshops for other organizations and projects, and has a resource binder with information about abortion services, counseling, and queer/trans-friendly health services in Montreal.
